The Bean Trees

Author's note: I was recently introduced to The Bean Trees. This book had come up before as an option but, with a title like that I thought that it had to be this boring book. Later on this year I overheard a group talking about it and thought that it actually sounded pretty good. In this first piece I was given I prompt by Mr. Johnson - Can you find anything that shows the difficulty to differentiate between sacred and profane.

Missy has seen more in the last two days then in here whole life. Attempted theft.  Responsibility of a child. Abuse.  This child has been a burden for only a few hours, if that, already she doesn't know how to treat this being. She sat quietly in the bathtub watching me and I prayed she had enough backbone to not fall over and drown, because I had to let her go. This baby is a sacred symbol and to let her just drowned would be an unconceivable act. Whenever you first see a baby, you think of how cute they are, innocent. However, after some layers are removed, there are certain things that will scare you for life. A bruise here and there is not a big deal; it is not unlike a small child to get bruises. More layers removed, the more bruises you see. The more pain is revealed. Your eyes have not witnessed more hurt or pain. Not even being employed by a hospital, could not have prepared you for this. You haven't even loss your virginity at twenty, and this child has lost more then that. She has lost things that she doesn't even know exist. Dignity. Innocence.
